Advanced Techniques

At Summit Orthopedics, our experienced physical therapists undergo rigorous training in a variety of therapy techniques. Many therapists hold specialty certifications, allowing them to offer advanced techniques to meet the unique needs of Minneapolis/St. Paul residents.

When you turn to Summit Orthopedics to help recover from injury or surgery, you may benefit from one of these unique offerings.

Anti-Gravity Treadmill: AlterG

AlterG walking or running is an excellent way to reduce stress on your joints. It can help people of all ages and stages of life, from elite athletes to patients getting ready for orthopedic surgery, strengthen muscles and improve mobility.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy, which uses pressure and resistance to restore balance and motion, may help with headaches, lower back pain and other neurologic or orthopedic issues.

Dry Needling

With dry needling, a therapist inserts a thin needle into sore or injured muscles. Overtime, this approach reduces pain and restores muscle function.

Graston Technique

Over time, scarring or other tissue can build up and restrict mobilization. The Graston Technique uses a set of special instruments to break down scar tissue and other tissues that restrict your range of motion. It’s often performed alongside other therapies.

Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization is an advanced technique that reduces pain and improves the range of motion for people with stiff or painful joints. A physical therapist moves a patient’s joints through specific movements, sometimes applying different amounts of pressure through the joint’s range of motion.

McKenzie Method

The McKenzie Method is used to systematically evaluate pain. This evaluation guides the therapist toward a treatment plan that helps patients move past pain. Our therapists
may use the McKenzie Method with people who experience pain in the back, neck or upper or lower limbs.

Mulligan Manual Therapy Concept

With the Mulligan Manual Therapy Concept, a therapist identifies joints involved in movement restriction and repositions them. This advanced technique reduces pain and helps patients regain the range of motion lost in injury or other joint problems.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Muscle shortness or tight tissues around muscles can cause mobility issues and painful symptoms. Myofascial release therapy releases muscle shortness and tight tissues to bring symptomatic relief. Using this therapy can help alleviate symptoms related to sports, occupational or automobile accidents.

Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)

SFMA is an advanced technique that determines the root of pain and poor movement. Therapists have patients perform an extensive series of movements and grade these movements as either functional or dysfunctional and painful or not painful. The therapist then develops a therapeutic treatment plan to address areas of dysfunction and pain.

Strain-Counterstrain Technique

Joint and spine injuries can cause muscles, joints and connective tissues to tighten up and cause pain. The Strain-Counterstrain technique helps muscles, joints and connective tissues to relax, reducing pain and tension.

TRX

The TRX anchor system allows patients to perform specific exercises that engage muscles throughout the body. It is a great treatment option for anyone needing functional strength training, ranging from elite athletes wanting to improve performance to people who want to go about their everyday lives with greater freedom and mobility.
