My name is Dr. Tracy Rupke. I’m an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle surgery as well as orthopedic sports medicine. I have four children and two dogs. So it keeps me busy on both ends, both in my career and in my home life. So I have identical twin boys and two girls. And they’re wonderful. And a very supportive husband obviously, having to balance all of that in my life. But at the end of the day, it works well. A lot of the patients I see, their main concern is their level of function, whether it’s pain or other symptoms that are preventing them from being as active as they want to be. And for an elderly patient, that may simply be being able to still live in their home independently or get to the grocery store and simple things like that. For a young athlete, it may be very high-demand activities, where they want to have no pain and no limitations playing their sport or doing their activity. And so it’s really variable. But that’s where the interaction with the patient is so important because everybody’s goals are so different. And it’s really important to try and understand what the patient’s goals are in order to provide the right solution for them. There’s nothing more rewarding than taking somebody who comes in to see you with a problem, going through the process of either surgical or nonsurgical treatment, and at the end of the day, having them come back to see you to say, “Look, I’m doin’ great. This is what I’ve been able to get back to doing.” And that’s just incredibly rewarding. So while I enjoy the time that I spend in the operating room, the time spent with patients is really where you get feedback on what was working, what’s not working, and the impact that you’re able to have on other people’s lives.
